Natrol Melatonin Clamshell

I occasionally take Natrol melatonin, but I felt that their bottle had some flaws. Therefore, I modeled a speculative clamshell container to solve these problems.

Natrol tablets are a fast-acting, water-free alternative to melatonin pills.

However, because they're dissolvable, the tablets inside the bottle start to disintegrate when the bottle is jostled during shipping.

When you tip the bottle to dispense a tablet, the loose chalk rushes forward and spills out, making a mess.

In the US, “dietary supplements” such as melatonin do not need to be packaged with a child-safety cap. This opens up a wide range of possible shapes for a new container.

After sketching and modeling multiple designs, I settled on a clamshell container. This solution would be portable and allow the user to reach into the container rather than tip it over.

This tin would also stand up on store shelves, resembling the face of an alarm clock as a subtle nod to sleeping.

Rhino 3D Renders

In order to immerse my package into Natrol’s product line, I photographed and rearranged the pre-existing Natrol label.

3D Print Photographs

I also assembled a working hinge for my container using music wire and photographed it with real melatonin tablets.

Spec Drawing

For manufacturing purposes, I developed a spec drawing laying out information about length and radii.
